Got me thinking, since I watched the episode that exposed me to Iron Chef again...
What was the very first episode you remember watching? Were you hooked immediately or did it take a few more to make it appointment television for you?
For me, it was Battle Octopus: Yoneda vs. Kobe (episode 645 in the ICC). All it took was watching Iron Chef Kobe ascend into view, thinking that was the coolest thing ever, and I never looked back.

I don't remember which was the first episode hubby and I saw. He was doing the guy thing with the remote, flipping through the channels to see what was on, and we stumbled upon Iron Chef on Food Network one Friday night. We were immediately intrigued, and watched pretty faithfully from then on.

Nakamura-san's retirement battle on KTSF 26 in San Francisco was the first battle I ever viewed. Hooked from that point on...

I don't remember what was the first episode I saw, too. To be honest, I was not so much interest in Gourmet or Battle in those days but just feeling "Oh, they are airing an unusual style of show." so...yes, it took some time for me to notice it was a classy show and make it my favorite TV show. I became much interested in it pretty later. I think the first episode that gave me a deep impression was Sakai's wine battle against Jo (509 in ICC).

I honestly can't remember, but I know I was instantly hooked, whichever episode it was!

Mine was Sakai's Octopus battle, to the best of my recollection. I remember reading a Time magazine article on Bobby Flay and the New York Battle with Morimoto, and that night I was watching the show to see what it was about. Hooked instantly.
My most vivid battle was Chen's squid battle. Kind of hard not to remember the squid ink fried rice.
