I'm happy to report our iMac didn't have a virus after all. All that was wrong was one of the boards inside crashed and needed to be replaced. We got it back a couple of nights ago, good as new. Better yet, the replacement part was covered under warranty.

That's great, HC. Glad it was still under warranty. Seems nowadays, replacing something in a computer cost as much as getting a whole new one.

Sometimes the cost of fixing an expensive electronic device costs just as much as getting a whole new one. At least it was still under warranty- that's always a nice surprise. I had the same problem as you once, except it wasn't as big a part of the monitor that went out. I still had it replaced though (for free ;D). Some LCD monitors just don't last too long.

MA - it wasn't a problem with the monitor per se; just one of the circuit boards inside somehow fried itself. Our ability to open/close files and start/stop the computer were more affected than the display. The display was out of whack because of the bad board, not because of any problem with the flat screen itself.
And the warranty part wasn't too much of a surprise; when we looked back in the documents from when we bought it a year ago April, we found we'd been smart enough to purchase an extended warranty.
