Here is where I will post some of my favorite places to eat in Fort Worth and the surrounding area. If you get a Ft. Worth Mapsco, you will get a general idea what I mean by surrounding area. I have no pictures to put up of some of the restaurants on this thread at the moment, however, I will try my hardest to get some the next time I visit these places.
Mexican Inn Cafe
Cuisine: Mexican
Locations: 9 (1 in Arlington, 1 in Bedford, 1 in Burleson, 1 in Mansfield, 5 in Fort Worth)
About the place
Founded as a front for a gambling hall in 1936, this is a first stab at a legit business for Tiffin Hall, a skilled gambler who entered Fort Worth at the age of 20 and established many gambling halls in the city.
Not liking traditional means of advertising, he commissioned a pet burro to generate interest in the cafe by releasing him somewhere downtown with a banner that read, "MEXICAN INN CAFE ... MEXICAN FOOD EXCLUSIVELY ... FOLLOW ME TO MEXICAN INN." He would return to the side door of the place and beg for tortillas.
Tiffin Hall passed away in 1973, and businessman Chris Carrol purchased the restaurants from Hall's estate in 1980, but the place remains one of Fort Worth's cherished landmarks.
The Atmosphere
If you saw any westerns, then you would instantly recognize the feel of the place. The stucco and tile walls would tell you that you have entered a place that has taken a page out of history, and you know what you are getting. The atmosphere also helps the presentation of the food.
Atmosphere rating: ****
The Food
This could very well be the place where Tex-Mex was born, and still carries on the Mexican tradition on how to plate, and cook the food. All of the food, from the entree to the chips and salsa is presented with the utmost care, and everything tastes great. You could make the case that the place has the best chips and salsa in the world because they are prepared with stone ground masa, so the texture of the chips stands out when you dip the chip in the salsa.
Food Rating: **** 1/2
Pricing
With most everything at $6-$10, you can take your girlfriend(or wife) and enjoy a nice dinner with plenty of money to spare. The lunch specials runs to 4 PM, so you can enjoy a nice late lunch and it won't put a hurt on your wallet.
Money Required(based on a average dinner for 2): $$
Overall
The vision of Tiffin Hall has surely been preserved today. You enter the place wanting some good food, but you will leave the place full and with new respect for the history of Ft. Worth.
Overall Rating(not a average): **** 1/2
(Note: The rating on the pricing section. $=$10)
