I disagree as well, seeing as how the battle took place 2 1/2 years before the Ohta faction was even established on the show. Great battle, though.

That is a very well thought out and composed review, okonomiyagi. I may yet give it another chance - thank you!

Well...I should say that I wish I had more than I have to give. I tuned in late this past Saturday to give the new show a fair shot. From the get-go, it looked and felt exactly like ICA. The iron chefs they picked in particular did not impress me. In fact, I fell asleep and woke up during a tasting session that looked so staged that I turned it off and went to bed. I guess that's all I have to say on that. I'm not saying this show wouldn't be entertaining to many, but for myself it is a pale imitation of its source material, and doesn't even come close. I was hopeful for more, but such hope was quickly defused.

Well, less gimmickry can only be a good thing...

Thanks, neoblisseyx. Too many times things get taken the wrong way over written text and on the Internet especially.
Rosdaddy got jokes - but he would know. His podcast has featured many a notable guest, and if no one has listened to the Course Grind Podcast as of yet, I highly recommend going to Youtube and sitting back with a few listens. Good stuff indeed if you're of a culinary mind.
So wonderful to see above-average activity on this site as of late. If anyone happens to be lurking and hasn't joined as a member, please do join the throng!

Neobliss, please don't take offense. My buddy rosdaddy comes from (as he mentioned) a time where lots of us were quite passionate about the original show. We were there when ICA began, only to have our uber-excitement crushed by the realization that IC had become another Food Network tool. The new show doesn't look like it will be much better, although it is nice to know that it isn't specifically a Food Network product.
And this isn't to say that you and other newer posters aren't passionate as well - maybe we're just becoming grumpy old men.
But I digress - getting one's feelings on board with fellow fans is what these boards are all about.

Rosdaddy - you're watching late-era Kandagawa. He really shined (in my opinion) in the earlier seasons, when he sent his first challengers to Kitchen Stadium and even challenged himself a few times (including Mr. Iron Chef 1994). But yeah, Kandagawa episodes in general are among my favorites, he is such a personality! For a special treat, check him out in the December 1996 New Years Special!

Well, if we consider ICA to be a true successor to ICJ, they already retconned that story line. In the beginning of BOTM, it was stated Kaga is alive and well, and had send his nephew to carry on his tradition (if memory serves ME right, that is...)
In any case, Kaga is now 71 years old and I doubt we would ever see him again in the role.

Oh, no offense taken at all neoblisseyx. Indeed, I thank you for the info. Sorry, my response was probably mis-articulated.

I'll check it out, but I'm not overly optimistic. No offense neoblisseyx, but basing a show's success in the eyes of an ICJ fan based on its longevity doesn't sell it for me. I'm ultimately disappointed, but will check it out as a curiosity item. In any case, it's nice to have Iron Chef back in any format...

So this is just going to be another Iron Chef America then. Fail.

Going through old posts today - does anyone know what happened to the KS site?

I recently returned to my ultimate goal of watching ICJ in chronological order by air date. It would seem this is a lifetime goal for me, as I have been at it off an on for a few years now, but I digress...
I am in March 1997 presently, where 4 battles (Wine, Papaya, Wakame Seaweed, Honey) featured challengers who were previously defeated, looking for a rematch.
I must say that these battles (I have watched the first 3, planning to watch Battle Honey soon) are probably the best examples of the awesomeness we missed with the Food Network run. Each battle is filled with energy, starting off with all the challengers entering Kitchen Stadium at once and the challenger for the particular episode picking one of 4 secret themes. It's these unique departures from the norm that make these un-aired in the USA episodes especially worthwhile for this fan.
My special nod in the title goes to the New Years Eve Special from December 1996, which was VERY unique. I can see why this one wasn't shown in the USA. It really is catered to the Japanese particularly, was aired LIVE, and really dragged out (in a good way) since the battle was 100 unedited minutes long and the tasting probably went for another hour. But the end result (Nakamura's victory) may be one of the most emotionally-charged and fulfilling moments I have seen to date on ICJ.
Anyway, if anyone was able to grab these gems when they were floating around (and they may again, if Tetsujin posts them), I highly encourage a viewing. There is so much of this show that we Americans didn't get to experience. I am beginning to look at ICJ in a whole new light indeed.

I just came across a snippet from what looks to be the end of the Hong Kong Special from March 1995, one of the hardest to find episodes. I believe I recall the very end of the episode appear in a later 1995 battle, as they are talking about Kandagawa and give him fuel to send another chef to challenge the iron chefs. www.youtube.com/watch?v=4C4zSz9fCgg

Indeed. Tetsujin has been a Godsend to us fans over the years.
