Officially, the potato is a vegetable (although I really struggle with that...!!) and mushrooms are not.

Cancellation now would be a tremendous embarrassment, if not outright humiliation, for Fuji TV. Have the fans of the original series really turned against the concept of the show itself?? If so, then as someone who is part-Japanese, I would be very disappointed in the inhabitants of my ancestors' home...:-(

Some of his other films are quite good, and of course, "In The Realm Of The Senses" is a very (in)famous film. At the time of its release, it was often referred to as the most controversial film ever made. However, in more recent times, there have been some classic "extreme cinema" films made by Japanese directors. Miike Takashi-san is a legendary "shock auteur" who has made many excellent films in all cinematic genres.
Sometimes, films are considered shocking because the viewer doesn't understand the context (philosophical, religious, etc.) in which the film is staged.

tetsujin-san, I'm surprised that you wrote "Chin" instead of "Chen"! Why do you know it? We never call him Chen but call him Chin in Japan. Chen is Chinese pronunciation that food network started to use. When we read his Chinese name in Japanese, we say Chin. More interesting fact is that Chin's official name in Japan is "Azuma". He became a Japanese citizen and you need to have a Japanese name to become a Japanese citizen. Then he changed his family name to Azuma. Hello, Miwa-san. During the original run of the original series, he was Chin-san. Food Network anglicized the name to Chen-san for the dubbed version on their network. It's a Japanese show in Japanese language, so it's "Chin-san" to me...

Thank you, Miwa-san, for continued updates. I was shocked when the relaunched series was scheduled on Fridays at 1757 hours. The worst possible time slot for a show like it.
Planet Earth to Fuji TV: try changing the day and time before cancelling the series...!!!

Thanks a lot for your aid. --The original source... --As far as... --When the new show... --The Dream Match... Above 4 points are right butc --Then Gendai.... This article says they heard it from a person relating to Fuji. So Japanese fans are upset. Certainly we Japanese consider Gendai as a kind of tabloid. But they are a bit better than J-Cast as a press. They often pick up the topics from another source just like J-Cast, but they also do interviews by their selves. But even though they have interviews, they often stretch and decorate a story and write it sensationally. >And, right, as of right now the cancellation (or rumors thereof) have not been confirmed. ¨Right. Not confirmed yet. (except Gendai.) No comment from Fuji, even though their face book has started including fanfs comments gDonft cancel!h "I'll give you good ideas to up the ratings!", etc. One comment of face book says, "I feel it smells fishy that only Gendai published..." personally I agree Thank you, Miwa-san for keeping us updated.

These were released on VHS as part of a six-video series by Pony Canyon back in the mid-1990's. Many portions of the battles and the original broadcasts are edited out, but there are two interview-recipe segments inserted in each battle.
If memory serves, there were 18 battles from 1993-5 which were released this way, 6 for each of the Big Three (Michiba, Sakai and Chin).
The 1993 Crab Battle excerpts are terrible, just the chefs standing around mostly. Most of the others are much better, but overall, these video offerings are more appetizers than entrees!

I'm living in Kawasaki-city, Kanagawa, Japan. I posted comments in some different ways incl. confidential. My own request was: (1) Utillize sous chef as a nominee. My concern is the guy with down-slanting eyes (sorry, but almost crying face) who has been working as a sous chef since the early days of former ICJ in '90s. (2) One-night collaboration with Kaga, Fukui and Ohta. I proposed a story to Fuji to make it. That it was a Kaga's twin brother who died. Kaga was angry because his 2 iron chefs (Sakai & Morimoto) both lost in 21st century battle in 2001 and again Chen lost in 2002 Japan Cup. So he's been on a wandering journey all over the world...shounds childish story?? (2) may be impossible. In Japanese 3rd class' BBS, there were some rumors about the reason of Kaga's leave. His office or Kaga, himself and Fuji had a sort of trouble,etc... But it's 10 years. Wish OK now. Or, actually hard financially for current Fuji. Sorry for my bizarre English always. Miwa Kawasaki - that's a big place in the greater Tokyo "region" if memory serves. I have relatives in Yokohama, fairly near to you. Thank you for posting on my behalf. Kaga, Fukui and Ohta - that would be fantastic, but I wonder if the producer wishes to remain distant from the original version? The rumors we heard here in the USA around the time after the 21st Century Special is that Kaga-san was very upset with the original producer and Fuji because of the way that it was staged, etc. I remember that some fans claimed that Kaga-san told Fuji TV that he no longer wished to be associated with the post-series specials, and this led to the "fugu death" announcement and the appointment of his "cousin" Motoki-san as the new chairman. I have no idea if any of that is true or not... For what it's worth, I think the new show, after a disappointing opening special, has been consistently excellent, at least as far as the cuisine being presented.

Thanks for posting. That is a rather old column. I would be curious to know if the ratings have improved at all since it was written.

Thank you, tetsujin070561-san Ah, I remeber you. It was @ the iron chef collection!? Vegetable and dessert! More collaboration with original iron chefs! Sounds nice! Thank you very much. Leave it to me. I'm not good at English but I'm pretty good at Japanese, did you know??? Sorry if my English is terrible always. (><) I hope that everyone can understandc I remembered this board when I tried to put my comment in Fuji TVfs message board. I came up with that I get more ideas from the everyone here!! Yes, Miwa-san, that would be me. Thank you so much (arigato gozaimasu) for being willing to do this favor. Your English is very good, and is easily understood by English speakers. Where do you live in Japan?

RIP, Hirano-sensei...
I loved him and "The Bunny Man" Kageyama Tamio, who was a well-known writer and even became associated with the anime movement. He also, if memory serves, wrote the screenplay for "Trouble Buster" which was a fairly funny comedy starring Kaga-san.
"Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence" is a terrific film, IMHO. Both Sakamoto-san and David Bowie are excellent in their roles.

Ian Kittichai is also the challenger in the new ICUSA with a battle against Forgione.
Enjoyed the special and I thought the Apple Confront was really excellent. I respect Michiba-san for his contributions to the show and to Japanese cuisine in general, but I think there is too much focus on him.
I'm dying to see a vegetable as a theme. Is the new show's producer allergic to them?!
The concept of selecting a fourth tetsujin from one of the early challengers appears to be a disaster. Time for a rethink on this...
Overall, I'm impressed with the level of culinary performance. It's equivalent to the creative glory years of the original show (1995-1997). Chef Wakiya is particularly impressive - technique, vision, presentation.
