ironcheffans.info/wordpress/?p=1399That's right. You can now see the episode that started it all. The very first episode of Ryouri no Tetsujin. I don't think this rare episode has ever been shown outside of Japan. Enjoy.

Wow. Just...wow.
I know when a show first starts that it has to get over all the pre-show jitters and everything, but holy heck, this was great! I literally laughed at Kaga's ingredient reveal. It's interesting how the show had changed so much over the course of just one season.
I can certainly understand not having the kind of background info on the challenger (since they didn't know who it was going to be until after the preliminary), but I find it strange that they didn't do much to introduce the Iron Chefs, other than by name and cuisine.
It's also really awkward to hear how *quiet* Kitchen Stadium is in this battle!

I was surprised by how little the assistants seemed to be doing. They were just watching Ishinabe work. I do realize they cut 90 minutes of cooking down to about 5, so I'm sure they did plenty. It just didn't look like it.

Also, I thought it was pretty neat that they had an international chef right off the bat--the fourth guy in the preliminary battle was from Nepal, I heard.
Nothing was funnier than watching Kaga trying to feel out his character. He definitely carries more of an emperor vibe in this one.

Wow...It's from Fuji TV ONE, PPV...Wow.

I Wish that the person that recorded these had contacted Tuthead. Unfortunately it's not the case. I found these from an anonymous Japanese uploader and contacted Tuthead. Unfortunately we don't know if this anonymous uploader will continue to share these great episodes. Fuji TV ONE continues to show more episodes (they've just shown episodes 13 & 14 on Friday), hopefully he will continue to share them. I wish we had a way to contact this person directly, or another person in Japan with access to FujiTV ONE, so we could be sure to get these great older episodes.

Hello Craig, nice to see you still around. If memory serves, I sent you something many years ago from where I reside in California when you were quite active with RnT and Stage 6. Thanks for locating and providing these rebroadcast battles.

I was very active when the Stage 6 channel was around, honestly don't know what RnT is or was. I might have been a part of it, but if so I have no recollection. Have not been keeping up with the IC site as much as i'd like over the past couple of years. Always busy, just moved 2 times in the past year or so, most recently about 3 or 4 weeks ago, already planning on probably moving again next winter... Have not been checking up on the site in the past few months or so due to being busy, moving etc,,, Found the news of the new series and about the rebroadcasts of the first season of the show. Got really excited about that, so using my limited Japanese skills i've searched anywhere and everywhere I could think of on Japanese sites, etc... To find these great first season episodes. We've got our hands on a handful or so of these first season episodes. Hopefully we will be able to locate more of these. Kind of odd, in all of my searching Japanese sites for videos of Ryouri no Tetujin and the new 2012 series. These old broadcasts are upscaled to 720p (by FujiTV one), but I have not been able to find episodes of the new series in 720p (even though it was broadcast in High Definition). The fanbase in Japan must not be as strong as i'd hope, i would figure HQ videos of the new series would be out there, but the videos Tuthead has on the site are pretty much as good as they get.

Tetsu, you knew Craig! Thank you so much for prodiving these epi, Craig! I'm in Japan but unfortunately, I was told by antenna supply contractor that my apartment can not put antenna to access FujiTV ONE (PPV channnel) because my apartment's location is just in too much residential concentrating place. But I'll try to call other Japanese fans if they are interest in sharing info or contents they have. Though I'm not sure at all if I can find any appropriate person. As Craig said, the fanbase & fan network in Japan is not strong... I've never found the fan community site like this board or Tuthead's site so far. (That's why I joined to this board though my English skill is not enough.) Only site I can find many Japanese fans is Iron Chef facebook but it belongs to Fuji and they check our comments always. So there is a problem with copyright if I wrote the direct link there. I'll try to find another way to get a person who can access FujiTV ONE.

miwaneisan, It would be great if you could find someone to help us with these great FujiTV ONE broadcasts. If you do, the schedule is here: www.fujitv.co.jp/otn/b_hp/912200261.html . I've contacted a few friends I have in Japan but none of them have this channel If you can find someone with this just get contact wiith me, I can upload those videos to the internet from DVD, VHS or even BDR (Recordable Blu-Ray Discs). I'm actually in contact with a friend of mine now that has access to the new episodes and has a Panasonic DIGA Blu Ray Recorder. I'm trying to see if I can get her to record these to BDR (Recordable Blu Ray discs), So we could have great 1080p recordings of the new 2013 episodes. She hasnt said yet if she will or not, she said she doesnt know how to use Panasonic DIGA BDR very well. We'll see... Too bad she doesnt have FujiTV ONE

One other interesting note from this battle: the chefs weren't present at the tasting. I noticed there was an "A" and "B" on each panelist's table. Was it a blind taste test? Did they know whose food they were tasting?

RnT is simply my shorthand for "Ryori no Tetsujin..." :-) We were in contact back in the "Guinea Hen" battle days! Does Fuji TV broadcast its main channel in HD? One would suppose so. Great work again, Craig, and bless you.

I think we're all pretty excited about the possibility of seeing the first 23 battles for the first time. The other big hunt is for the first two specials, the 1994 Mr. Iron Chef (both parts) and the 1995 Hong Kong Harbor. The second one, along with the Beijing special, cannot be broadcast commercially in the USA because the PRC government has blocked this. Most of the regular battles are accounted for, one source/version or another. I think Swordfish, Avocado, Soft-Shelled Turtle, Garlic, Orange, Wild Duck (12.1996) and Mochi (01.1997) are the missing treasures.

FujiTV does indeed broadcast the new show in HD, i don't know if they use 720p, 1080p or some other resolution, but definitely HD. Would be good to have some nice quality rips of the episodes like that. Some of the 2012 episodes that we have, quality is a little rough (the New Years eve special is particularly pixelated when theres any motion on the screen). It's great the source for these 1993 episodes are an upscaled 720p broadcast.
Those specials you mentioned, were they originally broadcast split into 1 hour blocks or 2 or 3 hours straight? The timeslot that the reruns get on FujiTV ONE is always 1 hour (right now since they are showing the older 30 minute episodes it is 2 episodes per timeslot) . If those were 1 hour broadcasts I wouldnt be surprised if FujiTV ONE would re-air those specials too. If they were 2 hours or more though, I would guess they would just skip over them and move onto the next regular 1 hour episode. Who knows though? Really wish I had a contact that could source these episodes for us. These re-runs are probably Iron Chef fans only hope of ever having anything like a nice quality DVD release.. Hopefully they keep it up. Last I checked, FujiTV ONE is scheduled to be airing all of the episodes through 18. They do update their schedule often.
