According to the TV program guide I got today, the air will be one hour... I wonder why? Tag-team match or...?
The guide says that American representatives are three chefs of the following restaurants:

Here are URL's for those restaurants' websites: www.mandarinoriental.com/washington/fine-dining/city-zen/www.craigieonmain.com/www.palenarestaurant.com/One hour? It would probably then be a three-man tag team match, I suppose. I had hoped for something a bit more substantial, but I guess I'll just be grateful to get something to indicate that the Iron Chef Japan vehicle hasn't been sent to the scrapyard...

Interesting. Perhaps ICJ will get to stay alive in the form of periodic specials such as this one. Perhaps that will help keep the format fresh for Japanese audiences who didn't seem to click with the weekly format.

Perhaps that will help keep the format fresh for Japanese audiences who didn't seem to click with the weekly format. Hopefully, that will be the case. This also allows Fuji TV to tinker with the format, if there is any interest left on its part in reviving the series at some point forward. I know, wishful thinking...if there is something different in the format of this special, that might be of interest. I wonder what the theme will be?

The theme is not revealed at the moment but the battle system is revealed. They say that the battle will be divided into 4 quarters with relay system for 4 battles. But it will be one hour on-air... I wonder how they would edit? The fans are commenting in FB page that the circumstances sound the very best but show-time is too short...

The management there is really, really stupid... At least now I know not to bother tuning in to this one.

At least now I know not to bother tuning in to this one. I agree... Anyway looking forward to tomorrow night 23:00. Three American representatives seem hard to beat! Eric Ziebold Tony Maws Frank A. Ruta Three individual battles and one tag team match. 4 battles in total. Each battle is 30 min. for one dish. I want to watch non cut version!!

I think it was a good episode. I think their new trial "relay system" was successful. They really did edit the four battles (30 min. x 4) into one hour! I mean it was better than I was afraid. They pretty much abbreviated cooking process (they made it approx. 13 min. for each). So if you are a chef or a culinary school student, it may be a little bit frustrated. However, the editing staff did good job. Overall, it was up-tempo and exciting. The difference of dishes between Japanese team and American team was remarkable. Someone said it was just like the difference between Japanese baseball and American baseball. It was interesting. In the individual battles, American team was strong. But in the tag match battle, Japanese team as strong. But, to be honest, I wanted to watch this as 2 hour special instead of 1 hour! In the 1st battle, Tony was amazing. He made "Dashi" soup with Kombu and Katsuo bushi like Michiba!

I only viewed the last quarter of the program. Here is what I don't understand about what you wrote - the one hour (or 57 minute) new IC episodes all had 47-48 minutes of actual program (total time minus commercials), so four 13 minute segments would not fit into the "hour" of programming. Also, there would be no time for program introduction, credits, tasting segment, etc. Was this special a little longer or were there no commercials, etc.? If it was just one "hour" long, then I would imagine that there must have been only 8-10 minutes of actual cooking in each battle shown?

Hi, Tets. On-air was longer than "47-48 minutes". This special was different from regular new IC episodes. It was over 23:50 at the moment of after the 4th battle was finished. 13 min. that I said is "approx." Not checked for each battle exactly. The time of each battle was different.

Not sure I understand, but thanks for trying to explain to me. I guess it was longer than an hour broadcast? I should have a good copy tomorrow, so I'll hopefully be able to figure it out then and report back on the battles here on Sunday. I'm happy to hear you thought the cooking was of a high level. I think we're all looking forward to seeing this as well as what might come next for IC. Maybe a year-end special for the holidays?

Unfortunately, I went yesterday but the program wasn't in, and won't be until tomorrow or Tuesday. Since I won't be going back until late August or beginning of September, I won't have an HD copy until then.
