I have seen that page before. I sent an e-mail to the guy on his blog about buying his tape, but I have not heard back from him yet.

Way back when, a few years back, I sent him an email too -- he was very nice and did respond at the time...but I doubt he would be willing to share.

Wow. I've never seen those before. I really want to see this battle now.

Well, like I said, it is reportedly not that great -- one look at the actor playing Kaga's "nephew" should give you a hint. Then again, campiness is what this series was all about -- in any case, of course I would want to see it too, especially to see what the series SHOULD have turned into, rather than Iron Chef America (and no, that was not a bash on that show)

Just in case there are some people who have not heard yet, we recently acquired a copy of this episode and have posted it over on the Iron Chef Collection. Enjoy. ironcheffans.info/wordpress/?p=81

And now I should ask -- for those that have watched the special, what does everyone think?
For myself, I have not seen the whole special yet...but I must say, from what I did see, the commercials were the most entertaining part. For some reason this special felt "dry" to me in comparison to the rest of the IC canon. Maybe it's because of the lack of the campy dubbing, maybe it was the new chairman (who wasn't half as bad as I expected in all honesty), maybe it's the "rushed" feel when it came to not showing everything they could. I dunno...but I kind of feel as though I can see why the show was discontinued altogether after this. Japan Cup 2002 wasn't a disaster by any means...but it wasn't, at the same time, up to normal IC standards IMO.
I am interested to hear what others think.

My first thought is that they went too far away from what made the show what we enjoy. Specifically, I did not like the Hattori Scope and the "Chairman" acting like an idiot. Kaga knew his character was supposed to be eccentric, but he didn't go out of his way to act like it. I also felt like Chen was the only one who was willing to do battle. Why else would they use him both times?
Watching a raw Japanese language version didn't bother me as much as it probably will bother some people. (I download/watch enough Japanese television that I'm kind of used to it. And while I don't know anything remotely close to enough Japanese to keep up, I can pick up a few things most people will miss.) I also feel like there were more commercial breaks than usual, but that might have been because this was a special instead of a regular episode.
