We have heard the "story" of Iron Chef at the beginning of every dubbed episode: "Nearly a decade ago, a man's fantasy became reality in a form never seen before: Kitchen Stadium, a giant cooking arena. The motivation for spending his fortune to create Kitchen Stadium was to encounter new and original cuisines, which could be called true artistic creations. To realize his dream, he started choosing the top chefs of various styles of cooking. And he named his men the Iron Chefs, the invincible men of culinary skills. . . ."
Now, we know that the intro above was unique to the Food Network presentation of the show. On the Japanese language episodes I have seen, the show begins with Kaga's intro about the challenger.
Does anybody know how the Chairman's story was told to the Japanese audience?
Was it just something that evolved over time on the Japanese show, but that Fuji felt needed to be explained to the American audience since were put into the latter two seasons of the show without knowing if they would ever show earlier battles?
Just curious.

Remember that Takeshi Kaga was and is a popular actor; Japanese audiences would have responded to him immediately. Hence, no need for an introduction.
The English-language introduction was necessary, mainly because (a) it explained the rules of the game and (b) there was no guarantee that Food Network would broadcast the shows in the original Japanese broadcast order.

Hmmm, that's interesting. Were Takeshi Kaga and "Chairman Kaga" even two separate characters in Japan?

Takeshi Kaga the actor is well known. Chairman Kaga, the character, is probably known now, but I don't know how he was initially introduced to Japanese audiences. I guess we won't know unless we get our hands on some early season original episodes.

Did anyone ever see that movie Death Note Kaga was in? It was playing here at one of the Cinamax theaters but missed the date. There are several sequels to it now, too. Wonder if he is in any of them?

I've noticed some of the shows say "5 years ago" and some say "nearly a decade ago". I haven't figured out the difference yet. Anybody know?

It has to do with when the shows were dubbed for US tv, and whether they were Morimoto-era or Michiba-era shows.

"Death Note: The Last Name" (from which the clip of Takeshi Kaga as Soichiro Yagami in the ICC Filehouse is taken) was released in the United States on a limited basis on October 15 and 16, 2008 with a DVD release by Viz Media (through Warner Home Video) on February 10, 2009. " L: Change the World" (a spin-off and sequel to the "Death Note" films [Takeshi Kaga DOES NOT appear in this one]) had a limited U.S. release on April 29 and 30, 2009 with a Viz Media DVD release on August 18, 2009. Hope this helps...

Takeshi Kaga IS NOT in "L: Change the World" (the only actor [other than Kenichi Matsuyama as "L"] to come over from the actual "Death Note" films is Tatsuya Fujiwara as Light Yagami.) Kaga-sama IS, however, IN "Death Note: The Last Name." I hope this clears things up.
