Asian-American fusion.. with an emphasis on using fresh herbs and spices. Stuff like Korean BBQ to Vietnamese Pho to Sushi to dim sum with a good sprinkling of steak sandwiches and other "regular" food.
re: NYC restaurants too much competition and it's expensive. Both Chicago and New Orleans are cheaper as well as being tourist destinations themselves.
