Just need to express my heartfelt sympathy to the Kim family upon the horrible death of James Kim, the young husband and father who lost his life in Oregon after the car they were in got stuck in the snow. So sad. May he rest in peace.

I hadn't actually heard about it. How did he die?

Mr. Kim, his wife and two young children, both girls, one is about six years (?) and one is less than a year, were headed to a hotel in the Oregon wilderness near the coast. They missed their turn and took a road that was supposed to be closed to the public by a metal pole gate but the gate was vandalized and left open. Mr. Kim drove on the "closed to the public" road some twenty miles until they got caught in a bad snow storm, got stuck in the snow and couldn't get out. The stayed in the car for a week. Their gas ran out so they took the tires off the car and burned them for heat. They didn't have much food with them so Mrs. Kim nursed the children to keep them alive. After a week Mr. Kim left his family and tried to hike to a main road to find help. He traveled some 10 to 15 miles but when the authorities found his body he was only a mile from the car. Apparently he was backtracking but died of exposure before he could get back to the car. His wife and children were spotted by a search helicopter and rescued. It is such a sad thing. They said on tv that this is the second time this has happened. The first time, because of vandals too, the gate was open and some guy with a camper on his truck, was lost there for over two months until he finally died. But he stayed with his truck.

All the more reason to have a cell phone when traveling. That's scary.
... and Amen.

It was very sad. Just a minor correction. Mrs. Kim was already nursing the 7 month old. The older child was also nursed during their ordeal to provide her with nourishment. She's considered a lactivist and another friend of mine, who is also a lactivist, has been a bit snippy about correcting this part of the story. A cell phone may not have helped Arrianna, they were high enough in the mountains that coverage would be spotty if there was any at all, and during storm, they'd be no way of using it. Mr. Kim was an editor for an CNET, I'm pretty sure he had a cell phone with him. Here's his obit news.com.com/2009-12-6141617.html
