Now that I have everyone's (or the few that peaked at this) attention, let me say I do not have the special proper. However, I wanted to point out a bit of Iron Chef detail that may have went over viewers' heads at the time. During the intro to Battle Soy Bean (February 1995), very brief clips were shown of Kandagawa battling Michiba in a "New Year's Special Battle." Kandagawa can clearly be seen de-scaling a Yellowtail, which was the theme for the final round of the Mr. Iron Chef contest. We know as Iron Chef fans, and especially these days, we'll take what we can get. Still, this is the one un-seen bit of Iron Chef that I would love to see. Three Kandagawa battles, in one special!

Nice find, okonomiyagi! I haven't seen the 2012 revival (and from what I hear, it's a mixed bag) - I wish it would have succeeded in Japan, but this is still further evidence that nothing can replace the original Ryori no Tetsujin!
Iron Chef America's sous chefs were different, in that they more or less did their own thing without instruction, almost as if the whole affair was staged long before the theme was announced. This is one of the many reasons why I feel ICA cannot compare at all to ICJ. Anne Burreil, in particular stands out - and wasn't she an iron chef at some point later on in the series' run?

Here's a little but of ICJ trivia, in my continued (vain?) hopes of stirring up more discussion. I am not sure if this has ever been brought up in all my years of following the show.
Does anyone know the names of any of the assistants on either the Iron Chef's or the challenger's side in Kitchen Stadium? Do we know if they use the same assistants every episode (probably not), or how frequent the assistants that return are on the show?

I just came across what appears to be a new site (at least I have never seen it before). It is a database for all of the original Iron Chef battles, with PICTURES and all kinds of other goodies! Check it out at ironchefdb.com/This is VERY refreshing to see a newer site for the original show after all this time, and it appears a lot of work went into it!

That is an awesome discovery, okonomiyagi. I only wish that we had more from the old fanbase here to see it. Still, keep up your research - at least one guy on here is reading, and he (I) is most appreciative! :-)

The other thing we have to keep in mind is that the judging commentary was likely edited for time. It could be easy to get a false impression of the judges' preference based solely on the comments that made it on air. ...except for the extended version of Battle Chicken (1993) that we saw on Food Network. They stretched a 30-minute episode out to an hour in length, mainly by giving us the judging segment mostly in full. This made me realize at the time just how much chatter the chefs have to endure about their dishes, so that the editors can catch the best comments for an episode.

Hi herringchoker - yes, it seems that only the faithful remain. Nice to see you still lingering around though! :-)
All I can say is the recent spurt of activity on Youtube is somewhat encouraging. That, and Keith thus far refuses to let his site go down. Alas, we know it will never be what it once was...

I have never been a fan of "bumping" on forums. But, I couldn't help but notice there has not been a post in this thread since January. Is the IC community really dead?

I am sure there were many - but before the fall of 1995 (when they went to 4 judges) we never got to see the actual scores, so we were often left scratching our heads.

I have since subscribed to this guy's channel. He has some of what Tetsujin has previously referred to as the "holy grail" of "lost episodes" (garlic, orange, 1996 duck battle). One can only hope that he eventually posts Battle Avocado (1995) or, even more importantly, the 1994 Mr. Iron Chef and 1995 Hong Kong specials! Nice to see some new activity. ICJ is not quite dead yet! Hello. He does not have Avocado, nor, evidently, the two aforementioned specials. I would also note that it's been two weeks since his last upload, so it's not clear if he will post more episodes. I'm keeping my fingers crossed... Rats. Well, maybe he has Battle Bread. Didn't you say that was your favorite battle?

Looks like there was no update to this poster's kind offer? I know the community has dwindled - but surely there is some Japanese-speaking member who can step up?

** UPDATE **
Found a pretty great file converter - converted the files to MPEG-II and they work great - the picture is more cropped than the MP4 on my computer, but only slightly.
Watching Video from a USB flash drive on a TV. We have come a long way...
