A bit on Wikipedia states that regular judge Masaaki Hirano, Rosanjin Scholar, died of a heart attack in 2008. Can anyone shed anymore light on this? A Google search doesn't reveal much.

I think we'd need to have a play-in to fill that 8th slot. Yuji "Mr. Perfect" Wakiya vs. Toshiro Kandagawa?
So what if, then, the match-ups were like this:
Slot 8 vs. Michiba Kobe vs. Ishinabe Chen vs. Morimoto Sakai vs. Nakamura
Semis: Winner of Michiba/Slot 8 vs. Winner of Kobe/Ishinabe Winner of Chen/Morimoto vs. Winner of Sakai/Nakamura
Finals: duh

Watching the New Year's Special between Kurogi and Michiba got me thinking...
We all know the original series ended with the four active Iron Chefs battling each other to determine the King of Iron Chefs...
But what if the Honorary Iron Chefs also competed in that kind of tournament? Would Sakai retain his crown, or would Michiba have something to say about that?
Of course, since there are only 7 Iron Chefs...who could fill the last slot to make the tournament structure all nice and neat?
Discuss.

I've yet to watch Morimoto vs. Wakiya, but I was very highly entertained by the first two battles...
Iron Chef Ian is a nutjob. That's all I'm going to say. The Ian from ICA and the Ian from ICT are like night and day.
Also, Kurogi just earned major brownie points in my book for what he did for Michiba at the top of the battle. Michiba making his appearance with his entourage of Sakai and Chen was also pretty epic.

I think this is the same guy, but Iron Chef Ian Chalermkittichai challenged Mario Batali back in 2007 on Iron Chef America. He lost in Battle Lentil.

You know, it's pretty sad when this is pretty much the only active thread in the whole forum...

Sanji,
Judge 1 in Kurogi's first battle (vs. Ito) is Honorary Iron Chef Michiba. Judge 1 in his second battle is Naoto Takenaka--you might remember him from the Sushi Battle vs. Morimoto from the original series.
ETA: Just noticed that Kurogi scored 1 shy of a perfect score in his second match. Now *that's* how you bounce back from a loss.

Looks like Kurogi will be looking for a shot at redemption in this episode, against one Yusuke Kawasaki.

Vote: Roberto Donna 10-Spot: I originally nominated him, can I still vote "yes"?

Nominee Kudo was certainly very...*animated.*
What a great double-header. We already knew Wakiya was a very capable chef in Kitchen Stadium, but Iron Chef Suga is beginning to impress me even more.
Although at this point, I'm beginning to wonder when the original Iron Chefs are going to say, "screw it, my hit men went down, time to take 'em down myself."

This thread is to speculate about who the fourth Iron Chef will be, or other thoughts regarding the empty spot on Chairman Tamaki's dais.
Personally, I'm wondering if the show is trolling us and actually never will have a fourth Iron Chef, and they're just using that as a way to sucker people in. As in, somebody might think, "Hey, they haven't announced who the fourth Iron Chef is. Wonder if they'll do that today...?"

David Bautista doesn't yet have any votes. Time to give him one.
10-spot nominee: Hiroyuki Sakai

I swear, Mizuki Sano sounds almost exactly like Kenji Fukui...if I'm not paying close enough attention.
That being said, this is a very worthy successor to the original. All the new cast did a respectable job, and the new Iron Chefs demonstrated that they're no slouches themselves...of course, Wakiya has had experience, but that's beside the point.
Did anyone laugh at Tamaki-shusai's "Good gastronomy"? It took me a few to figure out what he said...
Although why they didn't just keep "Allez cuisine," I don't know. It's such an iconic phrase of the show...
